A Hagyományok Háza mint alkalmazott néprajzi intézmény – I.
The Hungarian Heritage House as an ethnographic institution – this study examines the Hungarian Heritage House (‘HHH’) upon the 20th anniversary of its establishment. Examined are: HHH’s function in preservation of folk tradition; in cultural and artistic areas; its role in ethnography. The study begins by describing institutions that preceded establishment of the HHH - going back to 1951 when the ‘Institute of Folk Arts’ was established at the same location as today’s HHH. The building has over the years served as a center for the various folk revival movements. It has also been, and still is, the headquarters for the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble since 1951. Planning and negotiations for HHH began in 1996, finally beginning to function as HHH in 2006. Within Hungarian Heritage House there are three main departments of activity: The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble (a professional ensemble); the folklore documentation library and archive; and the Folk Arts Methodology Workshop.
