Timár Sándor has passed away. His teaching methods for traditional Hungarian dance have formed the basis of Hungary’s dance house movement. His work and choreography brought a fresh approach to folk dance in Hungary from the early 1970s. He has been recognized with the highest national awards. Printed here is the eulogy given at his funeral on July 8th, 2026. “For Timár Sándor tradition was not something that used to be - it was something, that IS; not a memory, but the present time. Not an object to be protected, but a spiritual and intellectual connection between people.”…"In [Timár’s] work, tradition …was a bridge between the past and present. He showed us that the oldest movements could also be contemporary when true human content speaks from them….and that our roots don’t hold us back, rather they hold us together.…his art will be with us forever.
