Honoring Timár Sándor on his 95th birthday (Oct, 2025) – a summary of Timár’s activities as a Hungarian folk dance expert, teacher, ensemble leader, choreographer, folk dance researcher and one of the founders of the dance house movement. Timár Sándor was born in 1930 in Ungár tanya near Szolnok in central Hungary. By high school he was already directing the dance ensemble of Verseghy Ferenc Gymnasium. Active in the Hungarian scouts movement he became acquainted with Transylvanian choreographer Molnár István. In1954 he joined SZOT Folk Dance Ensemble where he met others (Martin György, the Pesovár brothers, Andrásfalvy Bertalan, etc) who would soon become colleagues as the group of folk dance researchers whose work we rely on still today. In 1958 Timár became director of the Bartók Ensemble, in 1986 director of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. When he retired, he and his wife founded the Csillageszeműek childrens folk dance ensemble and the Timár Chamber Dance Ensemble. "There is no one who can more clearly and understandably explain what they envision…a deaf person or someone with two left feet would be able to dance what Timár asks…” By Simoncsics János.
