Székely Traditions – Part 8. The inspiration for this college diploma project towards a degree from Apor Catholic College in Hungary – has been this student’s desire to explore her own Székely heritage. Part eight is on Transylvanian Székely customs for village weddings, and then for death and funerals. Recurring locations mentioned throughout are Csíkszentdomokos/Sândominic and Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureș. She names traditional forums for young people to meet (rural work parties, spinning parties, religious holiday events, etc), mentioning also the places young people met after 1960 when they began to work in the towns. There was a series of events for when the boy asked for a girl’s hand in marriage. The circle of wedding events includes: ’crying parties’ – seperate for the groom’s friends and the bride’s – to bid farewell to their friends; making the written list of what the bride brought to the union; decorating the gates and routes to be used during the wedding events with greenery; the groom’s wedding party arriving to the house of the bride; the procession tothe church; the procession back to the groom’s house where the wedding feast was held; events during the wedding feast; the ’call back’ or after-party to continue celebrating, finish off the food and clean up. Traditions around death and funerals in the village include the process of dying, preparing the body for burial, laying out the body inthe home, the three days of mourning before the burial, the burial, the meal in the home following the burial, the period of mourning.
