Murguly Lajos, a Népművészet Mestere (1949–2025)
Farewells to Murguly Lajos (1949-2025) – a traditional dancer whose extraordinary talent has been wellknown in the dance house movement. He was from the town of Nagyecsed in Northeastern Hungary where he learned his dance in his home community. His talent was recognized early on and he was already performing with the local dance group at the age of 6. His’verbung’solo men’s dance has been legendary. He also played accordion. His figures from the ’csendes, csárdás and ugrós’ couple dances have been taught and are danced the world over. Documentation of his dancing can be found in Hungary’s national dance archives. He has been the only so-called’ peasant dancer’(meaning traditional dancer who grew up in, and learned his dance at home the traditional milieu) to receive both the Young Master of FolkDance (1975) and the Master of Folk Arts (2023) titles. His dancing and figures live on, for example in the Nagyecsed Verbunk Competition and many choreographies. Obituaries by Busai Norbert and Héra Éva are published here.
