Interview with fiddler Koncz Gergely. One of a younger generation of dance house musicians – he’ll be 40 next year – Gergely is from and still lives in Western Hungary’s Veszprém area. He tells about starting out playing kontra mainly under the wing of Puma (Fekete Antal) and eventually moving on to fiddle. He is one of the fiddlers for the Tükrös Band. He has played for the Hungarian Slovak groups: Szőttes Chamber group and Ifjú Szivek (with Hégli Dusán). He worked during the entire period of collection for the ‘Utolsó Óra’ (Final Hour) project where he turned out to be reliable taking collection notes, recording, driving the bands from home to the Fonó and back, etc. Luckily it was possible to arrange for him to do this instead of military service. He has been dedicated to authentic Hungarian traditional music. His advice here is that whenever possible in doing collection work, make recordings of the musician or band playing in their original function "…a musician plays completely differently when playing for dancing". He mentions his recent recordings “Magyarpalatka”, “Vegyes Gyümölcs” made with a select group of fellow dance house musicians. Now in addition to his regular gigs, he teaches, plays with ‘his Csallóköz (a region in southwestern Slovakia) friends’ and is often invited to play in Transylvania. By Grozdits Károly.
