Recommendation for a book: „Mindannyiunk meséi – Újraalkotott népmesék" [Everyone’s Tales – Re-Created Folktales]. Edited by Klitsie-Szabad Boglárka. 2024. Hungarian Heritage House, Meseszó Egyesület. The first printing of this book has sold out – a second printing is in the works. The publication celebrates the first ten years of the Hungarian Story Telling and Oral Folklore Association: it is a document on the state of Hungary’s folktale revival movement. The volume contains tales from 27 contemporary Hungarian story tellers – who are a variety of ages, level of schooling, backgrounds and vocations. The book includes contemporary fairy tales, legends, short stories, tales about the devil, humorous tales, tall tales, and ’formula tales’ –all from the years 2017 to 2024. The book discusses issues of freedom in story telling and the association’s story telling mentor program. Most of the story tellers included in this book are not ’traditional’ informants… instead they have all learned the craft of story telling through conscious study within the framework of workshops and trainings.
