Honoring Árvai Sándor – shepherd (1936-2025). Recognized with the titles "Honored Lifetime Herder of Hortobágy" and "Master of Folk Arts", Árvai Sándor was representative of a disappearing world. Born in 1936 in the village of Kurityán in northern Hungary, both of his parents were from shepherding families. Árvai started out his life long profession as a shepherd, working next to his father. At the age of 11 he was already tending sheep in thevillage of Kecskés. He worked in Eastern Hungary’s Hortobágy as a shepherd for nearly 50 years. He was pleased to share his knowledge of shepherding, grazing sheep, curing sheep’s ailments, birthing lambs, donkeys, markets, his crafts, sheepdogs and traditions. He did excellent leatherwork and wood carving with metal inlay. He had a special ear for music, an apparantly endless memory for songs and was known to improvise texts. Obit by Nagy Gábor.
