Ilka Gyuri
Sebő Ferenc’s column: Special guests at the Kassák Club. The Kassák Community Center in Budapest’s 14th district provided the venue for one of the famous dance houses in the early days of the dance house movement. The Sebő Ensemble played there for dancing – but they also invited a steady stream of special guests. Here Sebő tells about a lead fiddler – prímás – from the Transylvanian village of Szék/Sic known as ’Ilka Gyuri’ (realname, Moldován György) – who was a special guest at the Kassák Club in 1983 not too long before he died. It was always a great occasion when a village master musician played at a Budapest dance house. Luckily they recorded his music for dancing at the Kassák Club dance house that evening and successfully documented his authentic musical progessions played in their original function…that is, for dancing. Ilka Gyuri was born in 1927 in Szék. He taught himself to play bass, first playing in hisuncle’s band, from1945 he played kontra (Transylvanian viola). Later he learned to play leadfiddle, which he played from 1952 until his death in 1983. Music was his only trade. His wife Lenuca played bass in his band; his son played kontra. He was very proud that he had taught both his sons to play music. By Sebő Ferenc.
