Guests of the Kassák Club – Sebő Ferenc’ series. This particular instalment in Sebő’s series describes mainly music he recorded at a ball in December 1972 in the Transylvanian village of Visa in the Mezőség region. Musicians from the nearby village of Magyarpalatka/Pălatcahad been hired to play for the ball. Sebő was intrigued by the construction of the music played for dancing. He recorded the entire cycle of dances which he concisely describes here in terms of the sequence of tempos, melodies, keys, musical interludes and names of the dances. "… this is not sonata form even though the music style comes from the Baroque period. This – with much simpler, improvised construction – is music for social dancing….the goal of which is to work the energy of the crowd to a point of ectasy – the main means of which is monotony….always using another improvised variation on a melody – with rolling, tight rhythm and gradually increasing tempo. This musical sequence in and of itself, without dance is not suitable for a concert situation….” Here Sebő also mentions the kinds of changes that must be made insuch traditional dance music to make it appropriate for a city concert audience (ie. not for dancing).
