30 years of Hungary’s Contemporary Folk Dance movement “Kortárs Néptánc”. The ‘contemporary folk dance movement’ began in 1995 apparently as a reaction to the over-representation of strictly traditional, authentic folk dance choreographies of that period. It was an effort to show that folk dance could actually be contemporary. In the 30 years since 1995, twenty presentations have showcased 168 works from 60 choreographers performed by 40 dance ensembles – the majority of which have been amateur groups. The Martin György Folk Dance Association has been instrumental in the organization of these anthology-type gatherings. Nowadays "…the younger generation of choreographers typically show an immersion in folklore knowledge, though find it important to search for new paths and forms in their works…" Printed here is the speech given by Diószegi László on 2025 November 23 at Budapest’s Hungarian Heritage House.
