Gyergyói hagyományos tánczene
Mihó Attila, Szabó Dániel és András Orsolya Erzsébet új kötete a Hagyományok Háza kiadásában
New publication: [Traditional dance music from Transylvania’s Gyergyó region] by Mihó Attila, Szabó Dániel, András Orsolya Erzsébet. Hungarian Heritage House, 2025. Printed here are two short recommendations for this new volume. The rich folk music and dance traditions of Transylvania’s Gyergyó region has until the last 15 years been largely ignored by Hungary’s dance house movement. However, both Kodály and Bartók already did collection work in the region at the beginning of the 20th century. The volume includes Pávai István’s detailed study on the region including description of local playing style of the violin, cymbalom and gardon (hit cello). Included are 73 melodies for the local dance repertoire: verbunk, slow and fast csárdás, marosszéki and ceppel. The volume also includes archival photos, audio examples, written musical transcriptions, and written notes from more significant collection projects. By Árendás Péter. A more personal recommendation from one who was born in the region – in Gyergyóditró – and grew up amongst the music traditions. "…an impoverished and severe world where a large band only played four or five times a year, with small bands of two instruments serving smaller dance events. There was lots of singing however, and respect for the folk songs, peasant flute and zither…” By Kelemen László.
