Halmos’ family background. From a family of five children, his father was an architectural engineer/city planner, his mother a teacher. He spent his childhood in the town of Gyula in Eastern Hungary, where he attended the local music school. Music was important in the Halmos family. After a year in the military where he began playing ’beat guitar’, Béla began his studies at the University of Engineering in Budapest. He played in the university’s symphony orchestra which is where he met Sebő Ferenc and also Gyenes Katalin (who later became his wife). Includes excerpt from interview with Szomjas György
