The Muharay Folk Arts Association has since 1990 been assisting Hungarian village folk groups that perform and keep their own local folk dance, music and customs alive. The history of this network of tradition preserving groups goes back to at least to 1949, if not further. In 2023 the Muharay Association’s work and methods were added to Hungary’s national register of good practices for preserving tradition – like UNESCO’s ’good practices’. Presently 117 Hungarian villages are members of the Muharay Association. It’s worth noting that this network of local tradition preserving groups under the umbrella of the Muharay Folk Arts Association is a phenomena seperate from the urban dance house/táncház movement and also seperate from the movement of amateur folk dance ensembles that perform suites of material from all over the Hungarian language area. This report makes the comment: "…perhaps nowadays it’s as if the activities of the local tradition preserving communities would be the ’true’ movement, while the dance house movement (at least in its original form) – is something of the past..." Report by ethnographer Juhász Katalin.
