Book review: Oein DeBhairduin: Folk Tales of the Irish Travellers – Hungarian edition. The Irish travellers / Mincéirí /Pavee are Ireland’s nomadic ethnic group that make up about 50,000 folks – or nearly 1% of Ireland’s population. They themselves refer to the other Irish people as ’settlers’, amongst whom they lived peacefully until about 1960. The majority of Mincéirí lived in tents or wagons and travelled along with the carnivals, markets or fairs. Important to their cultural identity is music, singing and story telling. Traditionally they made a living from trade and hand craft, with the advancement of industrialization and use of plastics however, many lost their livelihood. The government, rather than offering them support, began to view them as a problem. Tales were told in the home, over a cup of tea, etc. The tale printed here is a reminder that grief can leave one paralyzed by apathy and loss if one remains in it for too long. Printed here are the author’s foreward for the Hungarian edition and one tale.
