Contradictions in Hungarian Peasant Culture. The colorful and lavishly decorated folk costumes and other objects of folk art seem contradictory to the impoverished circumstances of the folk artists that made them. This short article discusses this paradox, said to have evolved as a result of economic changes of the 19th century that caused an upswing in the life of the Hungarian peasantry. By Jávor Kata.
