Obituary - Lelkes Lajos 1940-2026
After growing up first in Udvard/Dvory nad Žitavou (South Western Slovakia), then in Szarvas, Hungary, Lelkes Lajos attended Budapest’s University of Horticulture. He was an early member of the Bartók Béla Dance Ensemble. From then on he was a life-long organizer, supporter and participant in the Hungarian folk dance movements. He was amongst the founders of the dance house movement as one of the organizers of the very first táncház (1972) in the bookstore on Budapest’s Liszt Square. His occupation was publishing in the field of horticulture and agriculture – however, he also published books on folk dance research and subjects related to the táncház movement (via Zeneműkiadó, Plánétás, Jelenlévő múlt, etc). He was the founder, director and choreographer of the Kertész Folk Dance Ensemble, the work of which he supported throughout his life. He was one of the organizers of the first National Dance House Festival in 1982 at Budapest’s Sports Hall and was active in the Children’s Folk Dance Heritage Association and the Martin György Folk Dance Association.
