A trip to Transylvania’s Kalotaszeg - Christmas 1985
[Some folk dancers from Southern Hungary] spent Christmas of 1985 in the Kalotaszeg village of Inaktelke/Inucu (Transylvania) with Kalló Feri and Piroska. The idea was to attend the Christmas ball there, but there was plenty of time for conversation as well. In fact they went out to visit Feri’s father Kalló Ferenc – “Malmi” or “Sírköves” – who made gravestones for a living. They talked about location of the Kalotaszeg region, the cycle of dances they danced when the elder Mr. Kalló was a young man in 1935-‘45, the musicians that played for them back then, and how they danced the legényes (men’s dance). Later on, lead fiddler Kalló Márton also told a tall tale about the time he outran a horse all the way to Kolozsvár/Cluj-Napoca – it had something to do with the oats he’d eaten. By Szavai József
