Many have already — and presumably will again in this issue — paid tribute to the unique qualities, impressive scope, and indeed the unparalleled nature of the singing talent and vocal repertoire of Anna Hideg, who became increasingly well-known in Hungary and Transylvania from the 1990s onwards. The folk songs, "kántáló" (carol-like) songs, and folk ballads I had the privilege of recording from her were truly revelatory — even to an ethnographer who is a layman in the field of musicology — thanks to their primal beauty and archaic character, and not least because of her performance style, which was at once nobly simple and exquisitely refined. Fortunately, after a long wait, a dedicated collector emerged to document this vocal folklore heritage, ensuring its preservation in the 2015 monograph "Annus néni daloskönyve" (Aunt Annus’s Songbook) — a work that serves as a veritable archive of this singular folk music personality.
