New publication: Jávorszky Béla Szilárd: a FOLKEREK – histories of the Vizöntő, Kolinda, Gépfolklór/Barbaro Bands. (Hagyományok Háza, Budapest, 2026). The book’s introduction describes the music played by these bands… “[In Hungary from the early 1970s] there was the Sebő-Muzsikás-Vujcsics camp of folk music which emphasized traditional performance of ancient melodies. However, in the same period another trend in Hungarian folk music evolved that mixed and adapted Hungarian folk tunes with elements of jazz and rock according to the challenges of the period - making them into new music. For lack of a better term, we refer to this genre as ‘folkirányzat’ or, music with a folk tendency – or folk leaning.…This music wasn’t appreciated or paid much attention to by the bigoted táncház folks – however this genre did in fact appeal to a wider audience who would never have set foot inside the dance house, and it drew attention to the value of Hungarian folk music…” By Jávorszky Béla Szilárd
